Where the versions diverge

The Russian Defence Ministry names defence industry plants as targets, including Antonov and "Khladokombinat №3" in Kyiv, the Southern Bridge, Kiliia port and ships; the Ukrainian side speaks of strikes on energy, medical facilities, shopping centres, residential areas and a private TV company, and of a fire at a food company in Kiliia. Ukrainian sources describe the damage to the Southern Bridge as a hit on metro infrastructure that caused a traffic collapse (see the card on the strikes on Kyiv), not as a strike on a military target. TASS writes that the Ukrainian General Staff "admitted" no missile was intercepted; the Air Force summary relayed by Ukrainian media does not mention missiles shot down, only drones. Russian agencies do not report the dead and injured, and Ukrainian sources do not comment on the targets named by the MoD. Independent sources in the selection have not checked the MoD statement.

What Russia reports

automatic summary The Russian Defence Ministry said the army carried out a massive overnight strike with high-precision ground-based weapons and drones, hitting Ukrainian defence industry plants involved in producing and storing cruise missiles and long- and medium-range drones, transport infrastructure in Kyiv, port infrastructure in Odesa region and sea vessels "used in the interests of the Ukrainian armed forces". RIA Novosti, TASS and Interfax relay the summary without information on casualties; RIA Novosti adds the usual line that the strikes aim to reduce the enemy's military and economic potential. TASS, citing the head of the Vinnytsia regional administration Nataliia Zabolotna, reports damage to industrial and energy facilities in the region. The MoD later named targets in Kyiv: the Antonov state assembly plant, which it says makes drones, FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles and FP-9 missiles, the "Khladokombinat №3" warehouse complex producing drones and Hornet munitions, and the Southern Bridge, "used for transit of military cargo"; in Odesa region, Kiliia port facilities and a dry cargo ship bound for Chornomorsk. Interfax writes of three dry cargo ships and a container ship hit by Geran drones. TASS headlines that the Ukrainian General Staff "admitted" it could not intercept a single missile.

What Ukraine reports

automatic summary RBC-Ukraine quotes Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who alludes to Witkoff calling Putin a "humanist": tonight, he says, Kyiv residents heard what Russian "humanism" really sounds like, a brutal attack with dozens of ballistic missiles aimed at energy infrastructure, medical facilities, shopping centres and residential areas; only strength, the minister says, will bring peace. The Air Force said the attack began at 18:00 on 21 October: Russia used Iskander-M, S-400, Zircon and Oniks missiles and 210 drones, with Kyiv as the main target; by 09:00, 181 drones had been shot down or suppressed, with hits at 32 locations; the summary says nothing about missiles shot down. In Vinnytsia region, according to Nataliia Zabolotna, industrial facilities, energy infrastructure and private houses were damaged. In Kremenchuk a drone hit the building of the private TV and radio company Vizit among residential buildings: seven employees were unhurt, but work has stopped. In Kiliia, Odesa region, according to the emergency service and a local outlet, the administrative building of the Titan food company caught fire.
